April Fools’ Day or fool’s day is amongst the most lighthearted days that mankind has come to observe. Fools’ Day is the strangest of all events as on this day we attempt to pull off as many silly pranks that we can think of on one another. The origins of Fools’ Day are not clearly known and people from different parts of the world speculate in different ways as to why we observe such an occasion.

A significant majority believes that 1st of April signifies the change of seasons. Quite a large number of people also believe the New Year was celebrated on this day before the current calendar was put in place. However, there are more evidences to support the theory that it was observed to mark a change of seasons, i.e. from winter to spring.

What is April Fools’ Day?

This day is observed every year on 1st April. On this day we try to pull off pranks on friends, family, colleagues, neighbors and sometimes even strangers. It is a unique celebration where some people put in lots of effort in making someone appear as a fool (a ‘bakra’ in popular Hindi). The core activity is to simply play a prank or a trick on a friend and then shout out “April Fool!” It is indeed a day of fun and laughter and a day when people doubt your intentions even at the simplest of things that you may ask them to do. What could be a better day for a prankster than to be allowed to play as many pranks as he or she would want and have a great excuse for pulling it off too!

April Fools’ Day pranks get better each year as it is unlikely that you will be able to pull off the same prank every year. People are on their guard on this day to not get fooled. • Sign Swap: Among the easiest pranks to play on people is the sign swap. You can swap the signs (Ladies/Gents) for the ‘Rest Rooms’ in the workplace or even at a public place if you can. Make sure that nobody sees you doing this and sit back and enjoy as people are bound to go into the wrong room. This is a classic that never loses its touch as people do fall for it. Some other signs that you can swap are the ‘Push and Pull’ signs on doors, or even the ‘Entry and Exit’ signs in a building.

• Change the language: Since computers are a common thing now, there is a lot that you can do using them but the simplest and the funniest thing to do is to change the language on somebody’s computer. You can also change the default language for Google or Browsers in someone’s system. If you do it for someone who is not so savvy as to immediately understand what has happened, you are bound to have a great time pulling it off!

• Max the volume: Increase the volume levels on televisions, music systems and even the speakers for a computer. Whoever switches it on first is sure to get a shock to remember for long.

• Using glue: Glue up small things that are often used at home or in the workplace. Select something that is used often and is not hard to replace so that you don’t end up damaging it. One simple version of this prank is to glue the eggs in a carton. This is a fun prank that even the persons at the receiving end are bound to enjoy. You can also glue coins onto the floor and point them out to people. It will be fun to watch people try to pull off the coins.

• Set off alarms at home or in the workplace: Set off random alarms at home to surprise people. Do not tamper with security alarms but use a simple alarm clock and set off alarms at odd times. People are bound to get caught up in this simple yet effective April Fools’ day prank.

• Fake phone calls: Make a fake phone call to a friend pretending to be someone else. You can pretend yourself or ask a friend to do it for you and have a little fun at a friend’s expense. A lot of different variations of cell phone pranks can be pulled off on people. One popular version of this prank is to start off a conference call between two people and then keep quiet and enjoy the conversation!

• The kick me sign: This is a classic prank that you can pull off on your friends. This may not always work as people are already aware of this prank but when it does it will certainly be a lot of fun. Stick a sign that says ‘Kick Me hard please’, ‘Kiss Me’ or something hilarious and watch as the person gets a surprise when someone actually complies with the sign.

• Stuff paper into shoes: Stuff napkins or toilet paper into someone’s shoes and watch them try and put their shoes on only to find that they don’t fit anymore. This is also a classic prank that can be a lot of fun if pulled off well. You can also try using double sided tapes to stick up the paper in the shoes so that people have trouble pulling it out.

• Change the time on clocks: Change the time on all the clocks and watches in the house. The best way to go about this one is to set the time forward by an hour. Watch people panic as they find out that they are late for their engagements only to find later that they fell in the April Fools’ day trap.
