Housewarming in India

When it comes to a country like India which has a rich religious and cultural heritage, everything has a spiritual meaning. The tradition of housewarming is not an exception. The integration of the religious and social aspects of human life depicted in such ceremonies is simply astonishing.

Indian Grihapravesh Ceremony

The housewarming ceremony in India is a full-day event and is packed with many religious rituals and social ceremonies that need to be performed by the owners of the house. Following are some of the most striking features and rituals of the event.

  • Tying a garland or toran made of mango leaves and marigold flowers is considered an auspicious way of decorating the main entrance of the house.
  • The couple steps into the new house with a copper mug or kalash of water with mango leaves and coconut placed in it.
  • The couple always steps inside the entrance by putting their right feet inside the house first.
  • The hom-havan pooja is performed inside the house by a priest or pandit who chants holy mantras and prayers in order to invoke and please specific deities to get their blessings.
  • Vaastu puja or vaastu shanti is an integral part of the procedure in order to please the Vaastu Purush or the God of the house.
  • Taking blessings of the living elders as well as departed ancestors is also considered very important.
  • The pandit offers prasad to all the people present, and dakshina is offered to the pandit in the form of food, food-grains, money, clothes, etc.
  • Then generally a sattvik or purely vegetarian lunch is hosted for family members, relatives, friends and neighbours.

Make Housewarming a Memorable Event for All

It is worthwhile to add some innovative touch to the housewarming event to make it memorable for everyone.

  • Putting up a slide show of family members with their extended families in past events can make the event exciting and emotionally touching.
  • Offering the relatives and neighbours some meaningful personalized gifts in addition to sweets will certainly make the event more memorable for them.

The procedures of housewarming may be different in different cultures but the underlying idea is the same, which is, to bring good-will for the owners and establish favourable connections with the new house, new surroundings and the new neighbourhood. Cheers! :)
