What is a Wedding Gift Registry?

It is a service provided by retail stores (offline or online) to assist engaged couples in communicating their gift preferences to wedding guests.

The engaged couple files a list of desired items with store(s) of their choice. The items are selected from the stock available at the store(s).

Guests gain access to the list usually through the stores (registered in the name of the couple getting married) or as a link on the online wedding invitation. They may also get it through the family of the soon-to-be-weds.

How it helps?

Whenever an intended gift is purchased from the list, the entry is removed so as to avoid duplicate selling. This helps the gifter maintain the belief that his/her gift is unique from the other. As for the recipient, Wedding Gift Registry ensures that no two gifts of the same kind will fall in their lap.
Since purchases are made from a list compiled by the couple themselves, Wedding Gift Registry assures the gifter that his/her gift will be appreciated. A level of secrecy is also maintained. Who bought what is not revealed and therefore the element of surprise remains intact. :)

Desired gifts may also include a flight ticket to a Honeymoon destination or other expenses for the trip.
Additionally, there are registry services that allow registrants to place items from many stores on a single registry (commonly referred as Universal Registries).
