It’s time to tell your daddy how much he means to you. The idea is to dedicate the day to your dad, open up and show your papa how much you care for him.

Significance

Father’s Day is special as it helps acknowledge the mostly ’taken-for-granted’ contribution of fathers to their families. The day was first observed on 13 June 1910 by the efforts of a girl, Sonora Smart Dodd of Washington, who felt strongly that fatherhood too needed recognition like Mother’s Day. She wanted a celebration that honored fathers like her own father, William Smart, a Civil War veteran who was left to raise his family alone when his wife died giving birth to their sixth child. Observance of Father’s Day provides children an opportunity to express gratitude and love for their papa or men who are like their father. The emotion plays a big role in strengthening the father-child bond.

How to Celebrate

Father’s Day is celebrated on the third Sunday of June in U.S., Canada, Britain and India. The celebration generally includes special gourmet dinners, gifts for fathers, and family-oriented activities. There are many ways to celebrate the day. Some kids make beautiful handmade cards to express their love and affection for their father. Some kids love to spend the whole day with their father by going out for a picnic, a movie, a treat, or shopping for Daddy. Some like to throw a party especially for their father, inviting his friends and family. Some like to surprise him by gifting something he is really fond of or, a keep-sake with memorable photos of him with family and friends. Whatever you choose to do, let him know that all his efforts for the family are appreciated from the heart. Try to pamper your dad and ensure that he enjoys his day thoroughly.

Decorations

If there’s a party at home,

  • Make a collage of photographs of your dad and you and paste it in the party hall.
  • At the entrance to the party hall, hang a colorful banner reading “Happy Father’s Day”.
  • Place banners/wall hangings having father’s day quotations at various places in the party hall.
  • Use flowers to decorate the party hall as per the theme.
  • Put on the music selected for the occasion to set the right mood.

Dress

Kids and fathers can dress up alike for a party. Alternately, kids can wear a dress their fathers approve of; or best a dress that has been gifted by dad.
